A D.I.Y guide to fitting glass splashbacks
We offer the following advice to our customers that wish to undertake
the fitting of a glass slashback themselves. Please read the following information first, even if you feel confident and seem
to know what you are doing. If you are in any doubt about doing this, give Splashing Colours a ring to measure and install
for you, providing you are within our installation area (70 mile radius of Bedford).
The fitting of coloured glass panels to an interior
wall may seem quite simple but there are some key things to point out, all of which have been learned the hard way. It is
not as easy as you might think to create a professional and well fitting coloured glass splashback.
The most crucial part to any
successful glass splashback installation is the template that is provided to process the glass itself. We strongly advise
that a template is made of the area that glass is to be installed (especially where a curve or cut-out is required for a power
socket etc) because once the glass has been cut and toughened to your specification, it can never be re-cut again to be made
smaller. Remember: templates should be made out of a rigid material (preferably 8mm MDF) and have enough tolerance around
the perimeter in order to fit your panels and as a margin for error.
Measure, measure, measure!
– Wherever you decide to fit your glass splashback i.e. above a kitchen work top, shower cubicle or bath for instance,
you must check the base line (bottom) where the glass will sit with a spirit level. If the base isn’t level simply draw
a perpendicular line of the length using your spirit level and measure between the base and the line drawn at each end to
determine the difference in height. By not doing this (where glass butts up next to each other) the ends will not be vertical.
You should repeat this vertically too at the ends. This will tell you if and by how much the sides are out of square. Now
you can measure between the lines drawn and add on any off squareness by measuring from your lines drawn to the wall/up stand/bath
etc.
TIP: Cut outs for power sockets. All UK standard plug socket 'back plate'
(not the covers) sizes are as follows:
SINGLE - 75mm x 75mm
DOUBLE - 135mm x 75mm
DOUBLE+SINGLE - 218mm x 75mm
Now
you have finished measuring for your glass splashback, get somebody to double check the measurements for you. If you follow
Splashing Colours D.I.Y fitting guide - you cannot go wrong and remember...
...If your template fits (with some tolerance),
so will your glass!
We hope you find the above information a great help in assisting you with your project. Good
luck!
